Preparing for a senior cat’s visit: changes in everyday life

Before calling a change ‘just age’, describe what is different for this cat. This is not an age-based test schedule or a disease checklist.

01

Daily changes belong in the consultation

AAHA/AAFP includes food, water, elimination, habits, activity, nighttime behavior and grooming in history-taking. We organize communication, not a disease-matching table.

02

Compare scenes, not vague labels

‘Less active’ may mean different things to each family member. Compare a specific former routine with what happens now. Include when you noticed it and periods you did not observe.

  • Meals, water and litter: observed differences
  • Movement, play and resting places: then and now
  • Nighttime, vocalization and grooming: what changed
03

Bring records and one main question

Keep dated reports, previous explanations and current medication information together. Attribute a family member’s observation rather than making it your own. Mark unavailable information as unknown.

  • Original reports, dates and storage location
  • Current information and questions to revisit
  • Your main concern for this visit
04

Separate explanations from next actions

After the visit, record the explanation, unresolved points and agreed actions. Confirm future visits and whom to contact with the veterinarian caring for this cat.
