Before an adoption event: bookings, interviews and next steps
How to attend and how an adoption proceeds vary by organizer and event. Yokohama City's notice says visitors need no booking and animals are not handed over that day; Kanagawa's open-day notice separates drop-in visits from pre-booked interviews for some cats (reviewed 25 September 2026). Do not assume that “no booking needed” applies to every part of an event.

You may be able to enter the venue without an appointment while adoption interviews require prior training or a phone booking. Read the rules for visiting, interviews and applications separately, including booking windows and capacity.
Does no booking apply to entry only, or to interviews too?
Are there location, age or household requirements?
Yokohama City and Sagamihara City state that animals are not handed over at the event. Follow-up interviews, screening, a home check or trial period depend on the organizer. Make travel and home-preparation plans after receiving the organizer's instructions.
Can you attend only to look, and what happens after applying?
How and when would a cat be handed over if approved?
Rules set by public services and rescue carers differ. Sagamihara City, for example, lists ID and documents showing that a rental home allows cats. Check any residence, age, document and existing-pet requirements, and ask the organizer about anything unclear.
Can everyone in the household share ongoing care?
Can you manage routine and veterinary costs over time?
Do single-person, older or multi-pet households need extra checks?
Cats may behave differently in a busy venue. Ask the carer about food, litter, routine, veterinary history and other animals. Mark unknown details as unknown rather than guessing. A mismatch is part of checking what would be safe and sustainable for both sides.
What health information is known, and what care may be needed next?
What is the cat like at home, and how do they handle change?
Who can answer questions after the event?

Times, venues, participating cats and capacity can change. This guide explains how to check an event; it does not guarantee a particular event or certify an organization. If unsure, contact the organizer before travelling.
For the 18 October 2026 open day, general visits are drop-in, while some cat interviews require prior training and booking; no animals are handed over that day. This is one event's policy.
